About VAT Calculator

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax added at each stage of a sale, and most invoices need it shown as a separate line. This free VAT calculator works in both directions. In 'add VAT' mode you enter a net price and a rate and it shows the gross price plus the VAT portion, which is what you need when quoting a customer the final amount they will pay. In 'remove VAT' (reverse) mode you enter a VAT-inclusive gross price and it works backward to show the net amount and the VAT contained within it, which is what bookkeeping and expense reconciliation usually require. The math is straightforward but easy to get wrong by hand: to add VAT you multiply the net by (1 + rate/100), and to remove it you divide the gross by (1 + rate/100) rather than simply subtracting the percentage. That subtraction mistake is one of the most common errors in manual VAT work, because removing 20% is not the same as dividing by 1.2. Because the rate is something you type in, the same tool covers UK VAT at 20%, reduced and zero rates, the many EU rates, GST in countries that use it, and plain percentage sales tax. The calculator always breaks the result into three clear figures — net, VAT amount, and gross — so you can drop them straight onto an invoice or into your accounts. All calculation happens locally in your browser, so the amounts you enter are never sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the net amount by (1 + rate/100). For 20% VAT on a net of 100, that is 100 x 1.20 = 120 gross, of which 20 is VAT. The 'add VAT' mode does this for you.
Divide the gross amount by (1 + rate/100). For a gross of 120 at 20% VAT, the net is 120 / 1.20 = 100, and the VAT is 20. The 'remove VAT' mode handles this reverse calculation.
Yes. VAT, GST, and simple percentage sales tax all use the same add/remove math. Just enter your local rate.
There is no fixed rate — you type the rate you need, so it works for the UK (20%), most EU rates, and anywhere else.
