Unlocking a PDF means removing the password and encryption from a file so it opens freely without a prompt. This tool does that in your browser: you provide the correct password, and it decrypts the document locally and produces an identical copy with the encryption wrapper removed. Nothing is uploaded, so neither the file nor the password reaches a server. An important point of honesty: this is not a password cracker. It requires the correct password and makes no attempt to guess, bypass, or brute-force protection. That is a deliberate ethical design choice, because the tool is meant for legitimate owners managing their own documents, not for defeating access controls on files you have no right to open. Removing a password from a PDF you own or are authorized to access is perfectly legal; circumventing protection on a file you do not have rights to is not. There is a technical nuance between two kinds of protection. User-password encryption requires a password to open the file, and once you supply it the file decrypts cleanly. The unlocked output preserves content, layout, images, and selectable text exactly; only the lock is gone. Common reasons to unlock include retiring an outdated password on an archived file, enabling text selection and annotation on a document you are authorized to edit, or preparing a previously protected PDF so it can be merged with others.
