Home cooks converting oven temperatures between F and C

Travelers reading weather forecasts in an unfamiliar scale

Students doing physics or chemistry homework with Kelvin

Lab and science workers converting between scales

Why use Temperature Converter?

  • Converts between all three common scales: Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin.
  • Handles negative temperatures correctly, which trips up many quick mental conversions.
  • Useful for cooking, weather, science homework, and lab work alike.
  • Updates instantly so you can check several temperatures quickly.
  • Runs in your browser and works offline once loaded.

Common use cases

  • Convert an oven temperature in a recipe from Fahrenheit to Celsius or back.
  • Read a weather forecast given in a scale you do not normally use.
  • Convert lab or science values to and from Kelvin.
  • Help with physics or chemistry homework involving absolute temperature.

How Temperature Converter compares to alternatives

Honest comparison to other popular options — pick the right tool for the job.

ToolMain limitation
Google search boxQuick for one conversion but does not show the formula or all three scales together
Phone calculatorRequires you to remember and apply the offset formula by hand
RapidTablesWorks but is ad-heavy
Temperature ConverterFree, runs in your browser, no sign-up, no watermarks, no file-size limits beyond your device memory.

Limitations & things to know

  • Covers the three common scales (C, F, K); rarely used scales like Rankine are not included
  • Display values are rounded for readability

About Temperature Converter

A temperature converter switches a value between the three scales used in daily life and science: Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. Unlike length or weight, temperature conversion is not a simple multiplication, because the scales have different zero points as well as different degree sizes, which is exactly why doing it in your head is error-prone. This tool applies the correct formula automatically. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit you multiply by 9/5 and add 32, so 20 C becomes 68 F; to reverse it you subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. Kelvin shares the same degree size as Celsius but begins at absolute zero, so you simply add 273.15 to a Celsius value to get Kelvin (25 C = 298.15 K). A few reference points make conversions easy to check: water freezes at 0 C, 32 F, and 273.15 K; it boils at 100 C, 212 F, and 373.15 K; normal human body temperature is about 37 C or 98.6 F; and absolute zero is 0 K, -273.15 C, and -459.67 F. There is also a neat sanity check: -40 C and -40 F are exactly equal, the one point where the two scales cross. Temperature conversion shows up when following a recipe with an oven temperature in the other scale, reading a foreign weather forecast, doing science homework that requires Kelvin, or working in a lab. Negative values and the offset zero points are where mistakes happen most, so letting the tool apply the formula avoids them. Everything runs locally in your browser, privately and offline.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 and add 32. So 20 C = (20 x 9/5) + 32 = 68 F. To go the other way, subtract 32 then multiply by 5/9.
Add 273.15 to the Celsius value. So 25 C = 298.15 K. Kelvin uses the same degree size as Celsius but starts at absolute zero.
Absolute zero is 0 Kelvin, which equals -273.15 C and -459.67 F. It is the point at which thermal motion is at its theoretical minimum.
At -40 degrees. -40 C and -40 F are exactly the same temperature, which is a handy way to sanity-check a conversion.
